The Great Task

80 Years Ago Britain Had Half The Population Growing Vegetables 20 Million People in Just 3 Years

Reigniting “The Great Task”: Plant For Victory

In October 1939, just one month after the start of World War II, the Ministry of Agriculture launched a campaign asking the British public to grow their own food. This campaign was Dig for Victory. It had no precedent, no guarantee it would work, and no time to waste finding out. By 1942, just 3 years later, half of the civilian population of Britain, just over 20 million people, were growing vegetables. Allotments rose from 819,000 to 1.4 million. A nation under siege fed itself by hand because millions of “ordinary” people got up and made it happen. If it was done once then it can be done again. Except this time it won’t be a temporary way of life it will be a permanent one. We are laying the groundwork for the 7th generation a principle that encourages us to plant trees under whose shade we may never sit, ensuring the choices we make today leave an abundant and thriving world for children yet to be born.

PLANT FOR VICTORY

Reigniting the spirit of Dig for Victory.

A PLAN INSPIRED BY HISTORY

Plant For Victory is our plan inspired by the 1939 Dig for Victory campaign, which was a massive success in the UK.

PLANTING HERE, THERE AND EVERYWHERE!

The Great Task begins wherever life can take root.

DIG FOR VICTORY

Just like with Dig for Victory, vegetable patches and allotments appeared in the most unexpected and innovative spaces.

Vegetable gardens appeared even on shed and garage rooftops.

THE GREAT TASK

The Great Task will begin with anywhere and everywhere that can support a tree, a fruit bush or even a wild flower.

There is no limit to where a forest garden, however small, can be planted.

EVERY SPACE CAN CONTRIBUTE

  • Gardens

  • Roadside verges

  • Roundabouts

  • Urban parks and playgrounds

  • School grounds

  • University campuses

  • Hospital estatesPLANT FOR VICTORY

Reigniting the spirit of Dig for Victory.

    AND BEYOND

  • Business parks

  • Historic estates

  • Land trusts

  • Churchyards

  • Wherever there is space for life, there is space to begin.

Our gardens are only the beginning. Just our gardens alone in the UK cover more land area than all the nation's formal nature reserves combined, but this is just the start. In this way, each and every one of us has a role to play. Each garden, each tree, each planting space becomes part of something larger. Together, we can contribute to the collective redefinition and reshaping of our urban and rural geography, and to the restoration of our world.

Reigniting the Great Task. Plant for Victory.

In October 1939, just one month after the start of World War II, the Ministry of Agriculture launched a campaign asking the British public to grow their own food. This campaign was Dig for Victory. It had no precedent, no guarantee it would work, and no time to waste finding out. By 1942, just three years later, half of the population of England, just over 20 million people, were growing vegetables. Allotments rose from 819,000 to 1.5 million. An American professor visiting Britain during this time was astonished by the health of the people. A nation under siege fed itself by hand. Millions of “ordinary” people got up and made it happen. If it was done once, then it can be done again. Except this time, it won't be a temporary way of life. It will be a permanent one.

THE 7TH GENERATION

We are laying the groundwork for the 7th generation.

A principle that encourages us to plant trees under whose shade we may never sit.

Ensuring the choices we make today leave an abundant and thriving world for children yet to be born.

IN SUMMARY

This great task, this mission, is not for the few.

It is a service to humanity of the highest order.

SEVEN YEARS

7 years is all it takes for a forest garden to reach maturity.

THE GREAT OPPORTUNITY

In seven years we have the means and the motivation to achieve 10 times over what Dig for Victory achieved in 3.

Seven years to begin transforming the foundations of how we live.

IN SEVEN YEARS

  • We could ensure our rivers flow clean.

  • Nutritious food could become available to all.

  • Biodiversity and wildlife could flow freely across a restored landscape.

A DIFFERENT LANDSCAPE

A landscape no longer governed by coercion and corporate control,

but by community custodianship, compassion and Natural Lore.

PLANETARY HEALING

By so doing we unlock true human freedom and planetary healing.

THE FOUNDATIONS

We lay the foundations for the first truly Ethical Nations to appear.

PLANT FOR VICTORY

THE GREAT TASK

Let's get growing.
